My Apologies to any and all I've failed to mention!

This site has been our attempt to document our family history, and confirm the family genealogy as passed on by Millard's Great Aunt; Besse V. (Hawk) Dunlap. During their later years his Aunt and her husband, Avner Dunlap, spent countless hours talking to surviving family, visiting cemeteries, and exchanging letters with some members of the Hawk families in Ohio. They were able to collect and pass on a wealth of family history which we have attempted to duplicate here. This site is by no means complete, and we have many unanswered questions. Reconciling conflicting census records is particularly worrisome, as many of the early Hawk families shared "common" names. Some "Hawk" families have been placed under "Mystery Hawks" until we can determine if they are actually part of OUR family. What we have found, however, is that Millard's Aunt's information was exceptionally accurate!
The site is indexed by a search engine "spider". If a name is included anywhere in this website, the search engine will find it.

Your surname is a source of great pride and dates back centuries. Our research indicates that Hawk began as a patronymical and locational name and means, "descendant of Haw or Hal; dweller at the sign of the hawk; and, one with the characteristics of a hawk."
Spelling variations include: Hawk, Hawke, Hawkes, Hauk, Hauke and others. The HAWK family traces their ancestral roots back to origin, and first appeared in ancient medieval records in Lincolnshire .
From very early on the HAWK family not only held lands and estates in but were also actively allied with other influential families. They also branched out into other territories and holdings, before taking the long voyage to the new world.
