OUR "Mysterious",  UNCONNECTED  HAWKS
               (so far...)
I have placed on this page some Hawk families that I have not been able to connect to  our line of Hawks due to lack of proof, yet they seem to be related  because of the circumstances, one way or another.  I'll list the families and my reasons for thinking they are related. Any help would be greatly appreciated.       Beth Haynes
John Hawk            John Hawk came to Athens County, Ohio between 1850-54. Available records seem to  indicate that he was from  Warren County, New Jersey. He is one of the Hawks who travelled between the 2 states quite frequently, and he died in Carthage Twp. Athens Co. in 1899.  His first wife was Elizabeth Tace, and with her they had Abigail, Sarah A., William,  Samuel and Elizabeth. John re-married between 1846-1850 to Areminta Malvinia? and they had Catharine, George W., John O., and Ella.

Reasons:          John had business dealings with Ezra Stewart of Athens County. The 1850 census there shows Jacob Hawk, son of Jacob D, living with the Stewarts as farm labor. John comes from the same area as our other Hawks do. Also, John's granddaughter Ethel married the nephew of Goldie Colmer, who is the granddaughter of Jacob. D. Hawk.
William L. Hawk           Brother to John, it is thought he came to  Athens County with  him, but he never made the trips back and forth like John did.  He and his wife Elizabeth had the following children in New Jersey---Joseph, Charles,  Jacob and Mary M. These children were born in Ohio--John, Anna G., William J., and Henry. Elizabeth died in 1865 and William married Mary J. Beatty. Their children were Laura A., Jennie, and Sarah. William died in 1908.

Reasons:       picture found of  son Joseph with Jacob, son of Jacob D., lived in the same township, had children and grandchildren with the same names as the family of Jacob D.
Godfrey Hawk               born about  1789, and appears to have spent his life in Hunterdon County, New Jersey as a successful farmer, and died in 1862. He and his wife Charity had the following children-- Mary Jane, Margaret, Farman, Joseph, Daniel, Jacob, Elizabeth, Wesley, Augustus, James W., and  Catharine.

Reasons:      as you can see, same family names; there also appears to be a connection with Godfrey and the Athens County, Ohio Hawks. Godfrey's will was found in the Athens Co. Will Book 7, page 379.   Also there is a land transaction in March of 1861 from Joseph Hawk(not his son) to Godfrey Hawk, lot 59 in Athens. This Joseph is the  son of the above-mentioned William L. Hawk.
Millard W. Hawk     of Oswego New York.  This Millard Hawk was born in 1904, and died 1996.  He was the Senior Supervising engineer for the New York Dept. of Public Works, supervised the construction or Interstate 81 through New York as well as laying out parts of the New York State Thruway, The Erie/barge Canal and numerous other projects.  He also served as President of the Oswego School board, and has an elementary school named for him in Oswego.  He has 3 sons: Robert, Jim and DAVID.
Reasons:  First; the name.  Millard is an unusual name and probably a family name.  Since we can't yet place where David P. Hawk was born, it is possible that this Hawk is part of the same family.  Also, When I looked up his photo on the Millard Hawk Primary School Website, the resemblance to our family was striking. (This entry was placed by Millard D.Hawk)

Horrible Tragedy - Washington, May 15.
This community has been shocked by an awful affair that occurred about 10 o'clock last night. Robert A. Hawke, Messenger of the General Post Office, cut his wife's throat, about an hour after they had retired, completely severing the windpipe and arteries. He then made two cuts at his own throat, but was, as he says, prevented from killing himself by his wife knocking the razor out of his hand. Their daughter, thirteen years old, occupying an adjoining room, was awakened by the screams of her mother, who jumped out of bed and ran down stairs... (Hunterdon County Democrat)

Thomas Culleton and Michael Hawk were instantly killed by the explosion of a rubber vulcanizer, of which they had charge at the Trenton Rubber Works, about 7 1/2 o'clock last Wednesday morning... (June 19, 1883)
