NOTES FOR ELIZA JANE, FROM HER GRANDDAUGHTER ELVA J. ROUSH RYAN ROBINSON, JAN.2002:
William Jefferson and Eliza Jane came to East Liverpool, Ohio, to work in the potteries. According to family lore, they both did, possibly Homer Laughlin Pottery #2, which was at that time on the east end of town. William died of "consumption", Eliza Jane burned to death while caring for her ganddaughter, Verna Norris Mullen, after the birth of her second child, a son. Verna and the baby also perished in the fire which was caused by a gas leak. She lived next door to her grandmother on Pennsylvania Ave., above the wall--the house no longer exists. In the same fire, Carl Norris was badly injured trying to save the family. Verna's daughter, Patricia, survived, though badly burned on the face and arm. Patty lived to be about 30 years old, married and had a son before she died of a heart attack. It is said that Eliza pulled her clothes over the baby, trying to protect him.
